The roots of burlesque go back to England and France in the mid 1800s. Gradually burlesque found its way to the United States. It was an art form that was used by the lower and working classes to poke fun at the prim and proper upper class. In recent years burlesque has enjoyed a revival, particularly in New Orleans, where these photographs were taken. The performances are bawdy and raucus, laced with political, social and sexual satire.
